exfoliation: what you need to know

Getting fresh-faced with our products isn’t hard, but pretty much everyone knows that the easiest way to a clear, radiant complexion is exfoliation. Do you know why? And are you doing it right?

Before I started working with Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare™, my favorite way to exfoliate was to load a super gritty scrub on my mechanical face brush and go to town. Little did I know that I was causing my skin more harm — unnecessarily — than good!

Exfoliation does great things for the skin. What you’re doing when you exfoliate is sloughing off a layer of dead skin cells that are ready to come off, but just need a little push. These dead skin cells not only make your complexion dull, but can result in breakouts! Crazy, right? The dead skin cells trap dirt and oil in the pore, which can result in bacteria buildup and bam – you’ve got a pimple. Exfoliate regularly, and you’ll likely see a decline in spots. You’ll also see a reduction in the appearance of keratosis pilaris (“chicken skin”) and brown spots, as well as firmer, brighter skin.

But overdoing it is so easy — especially when you’re mechanically/physically exfoliating. When I overexfoliated in the past, it was usually to get flaky, winter skin out of the picture — and I found that what I was doing ended up making my skin even flakier and red. Turns out you can really end up irritating your skin by using manual exfoliants, making it red, dry, and sensitive to boot. Then I found out about chemical exfoliation – and my life was forever changed.

The Alpha Beta® Peels, Smoothing Body Towels, and Glow Pads all chemically exfoliate your skin – I know it sounds extreme and harsh, but they’re not at all! They’re gentle enough for daily use – and provide much better benefits than mechanical exfoliation. They pack in tons of antioxidants, vitamins, and other potent anti-aging ingredients to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, shrink pores, ward off blemishes, and in the case of the Glow Pad for Body and Smoothing Body Towels, firm skin and slow hair growth. The results are cumulative, so the more consistently you use them, the better your skin will look! I used the Original Strength Alpha Beta® Peels all winter – and I had no dry, flaky, raw-looking skin.

Have you tried any of our Alpha Beta® products yet? What’s your favorite way to exfoliate?
