But First, Let Me Take a #shelfie

As a first year intern at Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare, I get to watch the ins and outs of what it takes to run a successful company. After countless meetings, presentations, and several conference calls daily, you’ll find our president and C.E.O., Carrie Gross, whose decisions affect both the short-term and long-term success of the company, remains an ageless wonder.

I was fortunate enough to snag some time to interview her on her daily routine and what she keeps in her medicine cabinet to keep herself so fresh and youthful:

Q: Healthy skin goes beyond the skincare products we use. How does healthy eating and daily exercise positively affect your skin?
A: I believe it keeps your skin detoxified, increases circulation and metabolism, and it allows antioxidants to flow freely to every part of your body. High-impact exercise, such as running, causes skin laxity, which is why I mainly stick to yoga and love classes like Physique57.

Q: What is your morning skincare routine?
A:  I start by examining my skin using a magnified mirror to see what my skin needs. I cleanse with Clarisonic and apply an Extra Strength Alpha Beta Peel. Then I use Ferulic + Retinol Brightening Solution and layer it with our Hydration Booster. I am big on layering my serums and moisturizers! After that, I use a lab sample of our new Ferulic + Retinol Eye Cream, which will be released this Fall -it’s the best eye cream for my concerns!
Then, I apply our CC Cream (perfect finish and has just the right SPF protection), and finish off with my makeup. I like to accent my brows, lips, and cheeks in a very natural way. It’s important at my age. I also love lip products – balms, liners, lipsticks, and glosses. My go-tos include Tom Ford, Chantecaille, Bobbi Brown, and Chanel. Other makeup favorites include It Cosmetic’s Mascara, Dior Show Mascara, and Tarte’s Park Avenue Princess as a bronzer on my cheeks. Hourglass has great eye pencils.

Q: What are your favorite hair products?
A: I use our Root Resilience System – 3 simple treatments that literally cured my shedding issues. Sometimes, I even take our Scalp Serum and make a hair mask using items from the kitchen such as egg yolk, yogurt, and honey. This helps to thicken, strengthen and smooth my hair. I like Alterna styling products to finish.

Q: I know you are always testing new products. Can you give us a hint as to what may be released in the upcoming months?
A: I am very focused on our latest Medi-Spa Peel. It’s a weekly treatment (I actually use it 2x a week) in conjunction with our daily peel. Your skin craves exposure to new ingredients and this peel delivers a new mix of acids, as well as a brand new formula for step two, which is a milky peptide emulsion.  Did you know that peels hydrate and smooth your skin? Many people think peels can irritate and it’s BIG misconception!

Q: What are your three desert island products?
A: Alpha Beta Peel, Extra Strength Alpha Beta Peel, and Alpha Beta Medi-Spa Peel. I have been peeling for the past fifteen years and cannot go a day without! I’m addicted.

beauty sleep is REAL — why your skin needs rest, too

According to a recently published article from Business Insider, almost 40% of Americans get fewer than 7 hours of sleep per night (recommended is 7-9 hours) and an estimated 70 million Americans have a sleep disorder! The article included the potential dangers of not getting enough sleep, but left out the damage it could have on your skin. Don’t worry — the Skinformant has you covered! Read on for the top 3 reasons you need beauty sleep.

 1) Dark circles

Failure to get enough sleep puts our bodies under stress, which causes our brains to leach as much oxygen as it can from the blood. Oxygen-poor blood is dark in color, which is especially visible in the transparent skin under our eyes.

2) Breakouts

Stress-related acne can also come from no sleep — stress releases the hormone cortisol into your system, which can lead to blemishes.

3) Deeper fine lines and wrinkles

Finally, this same stress causes us to involuntarily contract our muscles — including those in our face (jaw clenching and brow furrowing included!), resulting in more pronounced wrinkles. Our body also generates free radicals when tired. These pesky molecules are one of the contributors to signs of aging, including fine lines, wrinkles, and skin laxity.

Not sleeping? It’s not hopeless! While we strongly recommend hitting snooze more often, try these three products to help the effects of exhaustion.

1) Lift and Lighten helps soothe and depuff the undereye area, and immediately improves the appearance of circles with pearl powder.

2) Clarifying Colloidal Sulfur Mask can be worn overnight (without ruining your sheets!) so you can fight breakouts while you sleep.

3) The Alpha Beta® Peel promotes cellular turnover and exfoliates, transforming dull, tired-looking skin into a radiant, luminous complexion.

What’s your secret to looking like you got nine hours of beauty sleep?
